Keshavrao Kothavale, the founder (late) of Majestic, started selling books on the sidewalks of Girgaum. In 1942, he started a book-selling shop called ‘Majestic Book Stall’ at Girgaon Naka in the shadow of Audumbara. Later, another shop was started in Suratwala building in Girgaum. Then in 1997, the first air-conditioned library in Mumbai was started in Thane under the name ‘Majestic Book Depot’. After that on the ground floor of ‘Shivaji Mandir’ in Dadar, in 2005 ‘Majestic Library’ and in 2015 in Pune. P. A library called ‘Majestic Book Gallery’ was started on the road.
In 1948, Keshavrao Kothavale also wrote books for young children such as ‘Chandrakanya’, ‘Thenguche Parakram’, ‘Jadya-Radya’, ‘Vasiliche Bhagya’, ‘Vidishechi Rajkanya’ and published them as ‘Keshav Kothavale Prakashan’ Majestic Publishing was founded in 1952. Mrs. Malatibai Dandekar’s book ‘After Marriage’ is the first publication of ‘Majestic’. Gradually Mr. Go. Ni. Dandekar, Jaywant Dalvi, Venkatesh Madgulkar, Madhu Mangesh Karnik, Arun Sadhu, Vs. C. Walimbe, Subhash Bhende, h. Mo. Marathe, Vasant Saravate, Shri. H. Joshi, d. Vs. Gokhale, Ratnakar Matkari, Shri. No. Pendse, Govind Talwalkar, Sharachandra Vasudev Chiramule, Asha Bage, Vijaya Rajadhyaksh, Uttam Bandu Tupe, Bharat Sasane, Mukund Taksale, etc. were associated with many eminent literary ‘Majestics’. Ranganath Pathare, Anil Avchat, Anant Samant, Rajan Khan, Niranjan Ujgare, Sanjeev Latkar, Sadanand Deshmukh, Sanjay Bhaskar Joshi, Subodh Javadekar, Dr. Bal Phondke, Bhishmaraj Bam, K. H. Purohit, Vilas Khole, Dr. Many writers like Anand Nadkarni, Vitthal Kamat, Shobha Bondre, Ravindra Shobhane, Ganesh Matkari, Dwarkanath Sanjgiri, Amit Bidve later joined the list of ‘Majestic’.
